Tales from the city…

I’m a Theater Queen. I can’t help it, it’s who I am. Since I was a kid I have loved musicals. There’s a feeling you get sitting in a theater when the lights go out, the curtain flies open, and the orchestra hits their firs chords…The hair on the back of your neck begins to stand up, and you feel the excitement.

A good night at the theater never disappoints! There has only been two times that I had a horrific experience. The first was at the last Broadway incarnation of Grease. I saw it with Jon Secada, and let me add that it was god awful…The second was a show that was just on Broadway in the last couple of years called Wonderful Town. I saw it after it first opened with Donna Murphy. (For those of you who don’t know, she is a Broadway DIVA. She’s one of those true Broadway stars–except, I hate her!)

After seeing Patti Lupone in Gypsy I know I’m going to have to go back and see it again. There is no way to adequately explain what the experience is like. It’s almost like having a religious experience. Now, those of you out there who aren’t interested in theater can never understand what I’m talking about. You won’t understand until you see it. Go!

I went to opening night of Gypsy and stood outside and got some very bad iphone pictures. The one of my friend Laura Linney didn’t come out that great but you can tell who it is. I now refer to her as: my friend Laura Linney. I think it has a good ring…LOVE HER!

The funniest part of the evening was when I was standing on the curb across from the red carpet and this woman began to do the press line:

People were wondering who she was? They were trying to see. I knew immediately who it was. Do you know? It’s the Third Flo. For those of you who liked the TV show Alice with Linda Lavin, you might remember her as the third Flo. Yes, it was Polly Holiday, then Diane Ladd, and then Celia Weston. She was also just in the movie June Bug. Anyway, it was a great night. I saw a few other famous people…Newman from Seinfeld, Corky from Life Goes On, the fashion designer Zac Posen and also Stephen Sondheim.

PS-Those of you who know Laura Linney will get the tittle of this post.  If you aren’t familiar with Armistead Maupin’s Tales from the City, you might want to check it out.  It’s worth it!
